How Children are Impacted by Hunger

It is very important during the early years of a child’s life to have proper nutrition. If not, this can lead to development problems and can lead to not being ready for school. Children who are food insecure suffer more psychological and emotional difficulties, can be more aggressive or withdrawn than other children in class, and are less likely to meet school achievements. In family settings, children have increased psychological and emotional distress causing different behavioral responses.

When children are food insecure, this can become a larger issue into adulthood. It can determine a young adult’s access to different resources and can lead to lower earnings. It is imperative that we make sure children have access to the foods they need for them to succeed not just for the day but for future success as well.

The Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry has been offering Kids’ Pop-Up Pantries once a month to help families in need. The pantry also gives additional food assistance to families during the summer and are launching a Backpack Program for children to take food home with them on the weekends and during breaks.
