In the Spotlight: August 2023

August 15, 2023

In the spotlight in August, meet Sister Katrina. A Sister with a purpose and a former Catholic educator who is still making a difference!

In 2021, after 53 years of teaching children in Catholic schools, Sister Katrina took a six-month sabbatical. While on break, she prayed and said, “I felt a calling to serve the hungry.” Today, Sister Katrina is finding a way to stay active as a volunteer at the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry. She volunteers five days a week and works in the produce area. She stocks shelves and lends a helping hand at the AAIFP Pop-up pantries. She said, “There are new faces shopping for food every time I work. I’m right where He wants me to be.”

Sister is a fixture at the pantry, works tirelessly, and cares deeply about those receiving food every week in order to feed their families. Further demonstrating her dedication to the pantry’s mission, Sister Katrina championed a proposal to the Springfield Dominican Ministry, resulting in a $10,000 grant.

Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” Sister Katrina shows that no matter where we are in life, we are truly blessed if we can be a blessing to others. To remember the less fortunate and lend a hand when needed can be something you’ll never forget, and neither will they.
